Grade One Learning
All classes are learning these things
Language Arts
Our literacy groups have been working on making and breaking words, Readers Theater, author studies, reading comprehension, punctuation and reading with expression. Mathematics We have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We have been building vocabulary around these topics such as different shapes (circle, square, cube, sphere) as well as their parts, vertices, faces, edges and sides. We continue to work on addition and subtraction of numbers 0-20. Science Part of our Grade One Science curriculum includes building things. Students have been given opportunities to explore building materials such as LEGO and other blocks, and have even been given building challenges. We will extend our building in different ways, and by using different materials. Fine Arts We went on a field trip to the Children's Festival. We danced, crafted, and saw a show about Uzume Taiko, a form of Japanese drumming.

Math
In Math we continue to learn about 3D shapes. We have talked about vertices, edges and faces. Students have worked on identifying different 3D shapes in the classroom and around the school. Can you find any 3D shapes at home? What are they? Language Arts As always, we are working on growing as readers and writers. Our Literacy Groups are going strong and students continue to make improvements. We have been working on the literacy strategies previously posted, as well as some readers theater. It is important students are reading at home and practicing their sight words. We are working on improving our writing by including interesting details, answering questions such as "who, what, when, where and why", and extending our information with the special word "because". Please encourage students to write independently at home, practicing their printing, and sounding out unfamiliar words. Social Studies We have been focusing on being good citizens at school. What does kindness look like? How can you be kind to someone else? This is an important conversation to have with your child at home, especially as a lot of changed start to happen in their lives (getting ready for Grade Two!). Science We have been looking at the seasonal changes for Spring. What signs of spring do we see around? We have talked about, and even looked for, signs of spring at school. We have been using our senses to feel, see, hear and smell these changes. Health We were so lucky to have Byblos bakery in this week to talk about healthy life choices. We hope students shared their newfound information with you at home! We talked about the different food categories: fruits & vegetables, grains, milk products and protein. We talked about the different super powers they give us. We also looked at "put it in the cupboard for special day" foods (junk food). Please support us by sending only healthy snacks to school. Gym In gym we have started Mission Impossible!! We are honing our skills and will continue to work hard on getting through the course! Some of our Grade One classes are using the website
www.prodigygames.com/play as a math tool. This site tests students math knowledge and provides them with just right questions to defeat monsters. Give it a try at home! Students have been given their login usernames and passwords. As we continue to improve our reading we are developing these strategies in our classrooms. Please talk about these strategies and work with them when reading at home. Language Arts
We have been working hard in our Literacy Groups. We are improving our reading skills. We are working on sight words, decoding skills and fluency. Don't forget to practice reading at home. The Calgary Public Library offers free library cards, and all students also have access to Raz Kids. Math We continue to work with addition and subtraction. We are building mental math strategies and number patterns. We have also started working on 2D and 3D shapes. We know that 2D shapes are flat while 3D shapes are "fat". We are working on vocabulary such as 'vertices', 'edges', 'face' and 'sides'. We have also been working on finding examples of 3D shapes all around us. Social Studies Grade One's continue to build our understanding of what it means to be a part of the community, and all the different communities we belong to. Science Our garden continues to grow! We have been able to try our nasturtium, our lettuce, and even our radishes!! We are so proud of all of our hard work. As our plants continue to grow they are in need of new homes. We will become designers and builders. Art We have started a new Art project with some students from Nelson Mandela High School. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity!! Students are working together to create a piece of art that is based off of the idea of Emotions. we have talked about how pictures and paintings can make us feel, we have even discussed why they might make us feel a certain way. We had our first meeting with them this week and will have another again in the near future. Gym This week we finished our Olympics in gym!! All teams participated and played really well together. The Lions Pride finished first, the Brave Bison finished second and the Mighty Mammoths came in third. Congratulations to all of our teams! Literacy
We hope your child has told you about the new daily literacy practice that they are taking part in. All 4 of our grade one teachers, plus 2 other teachers in our school, have been teaching mixed groups of students from all of the classes. Each child has been evaluated on their strengths, and what they could have some extra practice with, and has been going for a daily 35 minute literacy block to focus on the reading skills to best meet your child's needs. Some of the skills we are working on are: Sight words What does punctuation mean? (? ! . ) Do I understand what I read?Letter sounds Making/Breaking words Reading fluency Math We have been working on addition and subtraction strategies. (counting on, number line, one larger/smaller, two larger/smaller, making 10, doubles) We have begun to work on word problems. We play math games to practice our skills. We are practicing skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's Science Our garden is still growing, and we are continuing to care for our plants. We are looking forward to finally seeing some signs of new spring growth outside. We saw our first bee yesterday! Remember, don't be afraid of bees. Stand still, don't hit them! Without them, so many living things would not survive. Social Studies Ask me about our community, in the past and how it looks today. What communities/groups do we each belong to? Learning at Home * Practice reading. (Raz Kids or take a trip to the Genesis Centre Library) * Have your child think of 5 different things they did at school today (What did they learn? Did they have any special events like buddies? What skill did you practice in the gym today?) * Practice sight words at your child's level (google DOLCH SIGHT WORDS) * Skip count whenever you can! |
