We have been having a busy week!
We had our final event of our MSBS olympic games yesterday, and I'm proud to announce that our Lions Pride Family won the gold medal! Congratulations! Today we harvested our grade one crop of 3 radishes! Students were given the opportunity to taste a small piece of a radish that they helped to plant and care for. Ask your child if they liked it, or not...the reviews were mixed! A notice came home today about a nutrition presentation for Byblos Bakery/Food Impact on May 10. Please fill out and return your form and money as soon as possible. We began a collaborative art project with grade 10 students from Nelson Mandela High School today. We talked about how colors can help us express our emotions, and began to paint the background for our artwork.

Hi Families!
Here is a bit of a Math update for our class this week. In Math we have been working on: - addition and subtraction strategies (counting on, using a number line, making 10) - Looking at addition and subtraction 2 ways: 5 + 6 = 11 or 5 (I call this way double decker) + 6 11 - Math games! If you have dice or old playing cards at home, ask your child to teach you "greater than or less than". Tomorrow we will be having a special event! We will be making butter!
We will be doing this the "old fashioned" way, using cream and a shaking it in a mason Jar. Students will be tasting the butter they make, on crackers. We will be sure to tell you how it goes! Hi families!
Today we explored a new website that some of your older children may be familiar with. We tried Dance Mat Typing. Go to BBC Bitesize, Dance Mat Typing to practice at home. http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3c6tfr Yesterday we had a visit from a nurse named Rebecca, who told us all about how her job helps people in the community. We got to use a stethoscope and listen to our hearts beating! Today, we had a visit from firefighter Todd, from the Calgary Fire Department. He told us about fire safety at our homes, and what we can do to be safe. He told us that it is important to know how to exit our home if there is an emergency, and suggested that families all practice a HOME FIRE DRILL. Ask your child about this. I took photos of each of the children dressed in firefighter Todd's emergency clothing. If you'd like me to email you your child's photo, please send me an email at [email protected] and I will be sure to forward it to you!
Thank you for sending your Heritage Park field trip forms and payment back to school as soon as possible. If you need another copy of the forms, please send me a note or a quick email and I will be sure to send another one home.
We tried a watercolour painting technique, and then used fine markers to trace all of the lines between colours and shades. They turned out to be AMAZING! Thanks to Ms. Carey for showing us this! Thursday is our 100th day of school at MSBS! In celebration, we are looking at different ways we can show 100. I have challenged the kids to try to bring in 100 of something from home!
I have asked them to try and be creative. This is a fun counting challenge. Some ideas we brainstormed in class were: 100 macaroni noodles 100 buttons 100 cheerios or fruit loops 100 chocolate chips 100 dry beans Anything your child brings to school will be brought home again. We checked out a really great science website for kids, called
brainpopjr.com It requires a username and password to login. Username: CEDE148 Password: dekalb Please remember to practice reading and sight words over the weekend. Stay Warm! Please check the main grade one page for information about our new family literacy program, taking place every Tuesday in February and March from 2:30-3:30.
