We have been planting all week! So far, we have planted beans in bags, so that we will be able to observe their root growth and development. We have also planted a variety of vegetables in peat pods (parsley, lettuce, tomatoes, and nasturtium which is an edible flower) and marigold seeds in small pots.

Hello families!
I hope you had a restful break over the past few weeks. I see your children have returned to school re-charged with energy and enthusiasm, and are excited to begin new learning. Home Reading: Watch for small books to come home next week in your child's backpack. They will come home early in the week. Books should be read 3 times or more, to different people in your home (even reading to pets is allowed!) before returning to the school for guided reading practice on Thursday or Friday. Reading a book multiple times helps your child begin to remember high frequency/sight words and build fluency when they read. *Students should point to each word as they read* These books are very simple and easy to memorize, but pointing to each word as they say it will also help them memorize high frequency words. Sight Word Practice Your child has new word cards in their backpack. Please help your child practice these words daily. We will be adding at least 5 new words per week. There are 200 high frequency/sight words that children should know how to read and spell by the end of grade 3. If you are curious to see the word list, please google Dolch Sight Words. We have been studying The Gingerbread Man story in our class. Tomorrow we will be baking gingerbread cookies with Mrs. Di Mambro's class. Each student will make and decorate 1 cookie that they will bring home on Friday.
Hello families. We are starting to look at shapes in the world around us to prepare for our upcoming "Building Things" exploration in Science.
If possible, could you please take a photo of the front of your home. We are looking for the shapes houses are built with. You can either print the photo and send it to school, or email me your photo. [email protected] Thank you! Students have been busy appreciating the beauty of snowflakes this week. We have created art collages using winter colours, and have talked about how no 2 snowflakes are alike, just as we are all unique in the world.
If you are on Twitter, I invite you to follow my account (@ErinDiMambro) where I will be sending out updates on our learning! Hi families!
We had a discussion today about being a good citizen, and one of the things we talked about was being sure to say please and thank you to others. Homework: How do you say please and thank you in another language? We continue to practice being "brave spellers" and try our best to sound out words independently. In Grade one, we have been working hard to learn the sounds associated with each letter, and to stretch out words as we say them to hear each sound. In independent spelling, the focus is not on correct spelling, but on trying to record each sound within the word. Here is an example of student work showing this skill.
Hi families.
I have heard from many students that they are having trouble with RazKids at home, specifically, they have not been able to listen to books when using the site. I emailed Raz Kids and explained the problem and this is their response... This is an issue that we have been having recently with Safari. There are a couple of possible solutions to this issue. You could switch browsers to Google Chrome or Firefox, or you could turn on the Auto-Play feature for Safari. To turn on Auto-Play: Go to Kidsa-z.com on Safari Select the Safari option in the top left Select Settings for This Website In the pop-up that appears select Auto-Play and select Allow Auto-Play This will allow the books to play when you select them on our site. I hope this helps! -Mrs. Di Mambro We have been watching our pumpkin grow. When we started, we had put soil into a whole pumpkin in the hopes that its seeds would sprout. Unfortunately, it began to rot quite quickly. The students named it "Stinky". We took a large piece of the pumpkin and put it at the bottom of our container and covered it with soil. We can see mold growing on the decomposing piece of pumpkin, but it is providing food for our sprouts as it breaks down. Here is our timeline:
Planted - October 26 Picture 1 - 3 sprouts appeared on Nov. 3 Picture 2 - We had 10 tall sprouts on Monday Nov. 6 (It had been in the dark for the weekend) Picture 3 - Today! Nov. 9 - we have 12 sprouts and our first set of leaves is dark green, second set is beginning to appear. Hello!
We had some time today to practice logging on to our school laptops and using two of our reading websites, www.starfall.com www.razkids.com Both of these websites are available in the app store for free download. I am asking the children, if possible, to bring in a set of headphones to use in class when they are using the laptops. Over-ear are best for children this age, but if your child is used to using earbuds (in-ear headphones) they are able to bring those as well. Please print your child's name on them. It will be your child's responsibility to take care of them, and keep them in their own cubby bin. *school is not responsible for lost or damaged headphones* Thank you very much! |
